Misuse of wildcare africa name

Once again, I am sad to report that the organisation Care for the Wild Africa, a private company operated by Petronel Nieuwoudt continues to use the name Wildcare Africa in her web address and adverts - this is not only unethical, it is misrepresentation and , according to legal advice, fraudulent. We have appealed for this to be corrected - in response to our request , the name of the organisation was changed but 18 months later, they continue to misuse the name in their website address and internet advertising.

Continued misrepresentation may force us to go the legal route to address what our lawyers have advised, could in fact be fraudulent.

Whilst I wish Petronel and her company all of the best and every success, I appeal to do her to do the the right, legal and ethical thing and stop using the wildcare africa name.

Ollie aka 'Madiba' now in Tsavo

Ollie, an orphaned elephant calf rescued in Botswana, reared at Wildcare Africa in South Africa, and later relocated to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya where he was put through a special rehabilitation program and released in Tsavo. Special thanks to the Bateleurs for flying Ollie, renamed Madiba by his Kenyan keepers follow his story the Sheldrick Trust website.

Another calf born in the wild to one of Wildcare's 'babies'

A particularly beautiful white rhino calf, Mbali was hand reared by Wildcare Africa and later returned to her home in Swaziland. The Rileys recently informed us that Mbali is now a mother herself and has a healthy, happy calf.

The calf looks just like her mom did when she was a calf !

Sickening news about Moheng

Moheng, an injured black rhino calf was treated at Wildcare. She had been gored in the ano genital area causing severe injuries. With advice of specialist human paediatric surgeons, and minimal invasive surgery and loads of supportive nursing, she recovered and was returned to Lapalala where she became a much loved ambassador for rhino ( she coudn't be released because the scar tissue precluded calving and would have put both mother and calf at risk) . Tragically she was one of the first rhino to be poached in this current poaching crisis.

We we horrified when we heard the news over a year ago but even more sickened when we heard just the other night that she was shot by someone who obviously knew her, in her stable , with a hand gun in the mouth. I don't know what to say - I'm sickened and shocked.
To all who knew Moheng and worked towards getting her healthy - thank you.

I am consciously turning hurt to anger and anger to action.

Leopard release

Hand reared and released leopard has gone completely wild. According to staff at Shamwari , the female has just had her fourth cub. The leopard cubs, just a few days old were confiscated in a police road blog and hand reared at Wildcare. The male was released at Kwandwe and the female at Shamwari.

The experience and expertise gained at Wildcare Africa continue through Karen and Working Wild . Equipment, cages, bomas and facilities were also transferred to other facilities to support their work and efforts.

Boma 's, cage materials and transport crates were donated to Ishona Langa - a wildlife sanctuary in KZN. Bomas have been re erected and are registered with TOPS for rhino and elephant calves.

Cages, clinic and veterinary equipment, transport boxes , blankets and more were transferred to SANWILD wildlife sanctuary. Other equipment and cages to Living Wild sanctuary ; bird rehabilitation equipment to FreeMe Gauteng, mobile clinic and equipment to FreeMe KZN and surgical equipment to various wildlife veterinary practices. Mobile offices and containers were supplied to staff as part of retrenchment packages.

Thandi, an orphaned calf, now a free living mother

Thandi, an orphaned black rhino calf was flown to Wildcare by SANParks helicopter, a tiny and very weak calf. Ten months of intensive nursing and rearing followed and finally at ten months, Thandi and her rhino friend Kapela ( also an orphaned calf from Kruger Park) were returned to Addo National Park for rehabilitation. Thandi was eventually relocated to Karoo National Park. We are so excited and proud to announce that two months ago, Thandi gave birth to a calf ( in the wild and is successfully rearing it)

Wildcare Africa Trust \ ARC Animal Rehabilitation Centre

Wildcare Africa was founded in 1985, by Karen Trendler. Originally known as ARC The Animal Rehabilitation Centre, Wildcare Africa was founded in response to an urgent need at the time for a facility committed to providing the best possible care for wildlife casualties. Wildcare Africa laid the grounds for wildlife rehabilitation in Southern Africa. At the time that it was founded, wildlife rehabilitation was seen as nothing more than bunny hugging and as having no conservation value. Through a planned and sustained effort, we were able to show that wildlife rehabilitation can work and that it not only has humane value but can contribute to conservation if done properly.

None of this would have been possible without the incredible support of various people and organizations and even though the real and original Wildcare Africa was closed in 2005 - the impact continues.

This blog will bring you updates on some of the cases.
